Hello all stamp masters, This 10 Shilling piece has a "Postage" overprint that seems to be crossed out. What is the meaning of this? Is it actually crossed out? Why was this done? Thanks! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

It's not crossed out, it's the forme that was used to overprint fiscal stamps for postal use.
I have no idea why the overprint has a line through it.
Nice stamp! |

The postmark looks like 30 June 1912 so it'll be a chalk surfaced stamp I'd say. The perforations will help us identify the catalogue number |

The thin horizontal line is there to cross out the words STAMP DUTY and replace that with POSTAGE so that those stamps could be used for that purpose.
From 'The Postage Stamps, Envelopes, and Post Cards of Australia and the British Colonies of Oceania' (RPSL, 1887):
Three values, consisting of the Stamp Duty stamps, of Five Shillings, Ten Shillings, and One Pound, issue 1868, surcharged in black, with the word "POSTAGE" in Roman capitals beneath the Queen's head, and a thin straight line erasing the words "STAMP DUTY."

Fairdinkumstamps: Nice to see references to Basset-Hull's work on NSW, the two-volume boxed edition is a treasured library item for me.
If you know of the Queensland book available anywhere, I woud love a copy. |

Getting Basset-Hull with all the plates is quite an achievement. A magnificent work, relevant today as it was over 100 years ago when first published. |
