Opportunities abound, way beyond the fertile ground of deposed leaders.

For example, my cousin served on the USS McGowan (DD678), which was de-commissioned & gifted to the Spanish Navy. Not the best example, as it never made it onto a stamp (I printed a photo from the US Navy archives as a 90th bDay present) but you get the idea.

Airports, bridges, buildings, campuses, highways, hospitals, towns, tunnels ... let the searching & posting begin!

Burkina Faso of today has a long history of changing names, at least on postage stamps. The area now known as Burkina Faso was a territory within French-dominated west Africa. It got an overprint for Upper Volta in the 1920s and then separate Upper Volta stamps, its geography seen on the airmail stamp. After independence it became Burkina Faso. A fairly new stamp shows mail delivery nowadays, with French still as the general language. (Hi, Ikey - you have again introduced an interesting topic! Do you have a few of your own examples? K.)

The Reichstagsgebäude/Bundestag has a remarkable history, worth looking up. The first stamp (1949) shows it the way it was before the war, the photograph shows the park in front of the ruins being used to grow vegetables (1946). In the following decades the dome had to be taken down and the building was partially renovated and used for a variety of purposes. After the fall of the wall it was completely renovated by the architect Foster. Today the building is called the Bundestagsgebäude. The Bundestag meets beneath the elegant glass dome. Foster wanted it to represent transparency.

Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon until 1972. Earlier stamps had the portrait of the British head of state on their stamps. Tea from the island is still known as Ceylon tea!

Two birds represent the New Hebrides and the new country of Vanuatu. The New Hebrides were ruled by both France and Great Britain, as indicated by Condominium and RF and ER at the sides of the first kingfischer. The islands became independent in 1980. (I chose birds because Vanuatu has issued so many beautifully designed bird stamps.)

Postal cards here rather than stamps, but...

The Oil Rivers Protectorate (1884–1893) was renamed on 12 May 1893 and became the Niger Coast Protectorate (1893–1900).

The lion brandishing the sword is sybolic for ancient Persia/Persanes. Lady Law and Order tamed him in 1935 under the Pahlevi reign and during that year Iran became the name of the country (overprints served till new designs were made). In 1979 the revolution took place and the Shah was crossed out; the country became the Islamic Republic of Iran. The stamp of 1995 commemorates 1979.

Bangla Desh is a fairly young country. Up till 1947 it was a part of the British Colony of greater India (East India, as opposed to west India or West Indies). In 1947 Pakistan separated from India in two parts. Then in 1971, East Pakistan became the independent Bangla Desh. If you have been following the news, you will know that there is still strife in the subcontinent.
