This came in a lot of covers I acquired today, I have no idea what it is? Possibly Cinderella?

Any assistance appreciated.

There is an interesting article on College stamps in 'The Penny Post' vol.18(4) Oct 2010, starting on page 33 of the journal, also referencing James Drummond's book 'College and School Stamps' published in 2007:

Could we see the whole cover, if that's what it is? The Wentworth, SD cancel looks to be real or a good imitation of a real type and I can't imagine a little town like this (pop. 310 in 1930) having a business school. Correspondence courses would be possible, of course.

Wow thanks team!
Hy Brasil, I will put it up soon, it's a Valentine's day card but unused, just scribbled on.
Cheers

Hi Laurie,

Sorry to say that these school stamps were not used on post cards.

What you have is the end result of someone playing around with a post card, a stamp, and a rubber stamp.

Jim

In good condition, they usually sell for $5-10. Yours, unfortunately, is damaged.

Eric's website is a good place to see other college and school stamps, and what their value(s) might be.

Jim

Correct me if I'm wrong, Jim, but stamps like the one Laurie posted were used for educational purposes in business schools and thus had a function quite different from that of the Oxford and Cambridge college stamps. The distinction hasn't been made very clear in the previous discussion. Since the Oxford and Cambridge stamps were used on actual college mail, they're more like the stamps from local private posts, whereas stamps like Laurie's are more like toy stamps of the "Kinderpost" type.

Hi Erilaz,

There are at least four different types of what are commonly called "college and school stamps."

The first type are those that were actually used in 19th century business colleges to teach students how and where to apply the then-currently-mandated revenue stamps, how to address envelopes and apply postage, and so on.

This group also includes various copies, forgeries, and counterfeits of these types of stamps, which were issued by nefarious dealers in years gone past. One of these dealers was a guy named S. Allan Taylor.

The next group are those that were used by schools in lieu of actual postage stamps, to transfer student's mail from the school to a post office. The Westtown school issued several of these. And they were, again, forged.

Another group of school stamps are those that were issued by various modern schools as learning aids, and/or as philatelic curiosities. Basically, anyone with a mimeograph machine could issue "school stamps."

Finally, the (mostly British) school stamps were used to send quick notes to local businesses, students, other teachers, and so on. These were the modern-day equivalent of Post-It notes; they were not intended to be saved at all.

What Laurie has is a totally-legitimate type I practice stamp, that was actually used in some schools, but in this case is being used many years after the fact, by someone with, apparently, plenty of free time.

Jim
