New Ebay And Paypal Interactions

I made an ebay purchase this morning and encountered an entirely new interface for Payment.

ebay opened a separate window asking me for payment method include credit card, PayPal or Paypal credit.

Selected the PayPal option, went through the usual steps.

But my PayPal receipt now lists ebay as the Merchant rather than listing a Seller with an ebay ID. It also makes no reference to the item purchased. Only an amount paid to ebay.

This is different from a purchase made yesterday.

Looking at my credit card transaction used for payment, all that is now shown there is " ebay" where as before I had an entry showing ebay - ebay seller name". This makes the PayPal transaction receipt relatively useless in keeping track of payments for purchases, and helping with reconciliation of ebay purchases on the card statement. Who wants to look at a series of " ebay" transactions.

Phone calls to both ebay and PayPal advise that this is a new feature by ebay to enhance our buying experience, and PayPal only gets the " ebay" identifier as the merchant. I know that ebay wants to own the world and has been moving sellers away from PayPal to their payment system.

Has anyone been using the ebay direct payment system for purchases, and can you offer some of your experience.

My opinion for what it is worth and what is happening on ebay.

There will come a time with ebay that you will no longer see any seller information as everything will be purchased from ebay.

All to improve the buyer experience and sellers can do you know what.

ebay wants sellers to have no interaction with buyers at all.

If a buyer disputed the transaction, ebay would be the party who pays PayPal/credit card company. Since this is the process, it sounds right to me. ebay typically is the party who has to chase down the seller; buyers typically work through ebay on disputed transactions.
As the transaction handler, ebay is the one on the hook.

Just to clarify, ebay started this new payment system and has said that everyone will be switched on eventually. You can switch it on now if you wish. In the new system the seller's PayPal account is out of the picture I believe. The buyer pays ebay (the buyer can choose to use PayPal) and ebay deposits the money in the seller's bank account. No PayPal intermediary on the seller's side.

Your purchases, for as long as they show, still show who the seller was, but your payment doesn't.

I think this is correct, but I haven't actually made the switch yet, so someone else may chime in.

I haven't seen this switch yet but am curious what the implications will be - pros, cons, unanticipated effects, for both buyers and sellers.

That seems to be a well guarded secret by ebay, other than the 25¢ per item charge on multiple items per order which may be a killer for cheap stamp sellers.

The new interface is exposed if the seller is incarcerated in the Managed Payments program. Buyers from other countries have reported difficulties paying, possibly because the new interface is only available on US ebay. Unfortunately, ebay does not provide sellers with enough information to assist international buyers who encounter difficulties paying.
