I have always heard that Crowe certs are fairly reliable, at least from an attribution perspective. But this one has got me a bit confused. The shells are not complete, the left side almost totally incomplete. Further, the right shell, to my inexperienced eye, looks to have possibly been drawn in. With the cert stating very specifically the position, am I "out to lunch" on this presumption. If I were looking at this stamp without the cert, I would think #14, Type 2.....

I think that you can take Bill Crow's certs to the bank, including this one.

I'll offer a different type of response: To any expertizer or knowledgeable specialist worth his or her salt, the stamp, barring some specific alterations, is immediately identifiable as a Type I, no squinting, debate, or hand wringing required.

RE: sheetguy's post

I normally link a Stamp Smarter page rather than repeatedly post the same identification information over and over here. I thought that the original poster was not asking for basic identifying information but rather feedback on this particular stamp and the Crow identification.

But for more basic ID info

There are no Scott 14, 15, or 16 with two guide dots at the lower left. That only occurs on the bottom row.

In general, on the Toppan Carpenter plates, which made regular issues of this era, there are no guide dots beneath the bottom row. This is because they made the plates top down, and the "top row", initial setting guide dots are above the top row stamps usually.

The 10c stamp is an exception. Plate 1 of the 10c stamp - the plate which made all the imperfs - was entered bottom up, rather than the usual top down. Type I stamps are bottom row only, and as Bill stated, those guide dots at lower left are a big indicator of the initial transfer roll setting for each column.

Don't confuse them with the single guide dot often found at top left of many Ty IIs. These are at bottom left and there will not be another stamp beneath it, since Ty Is are bottom row.

Praise and respect to Mr. Crowe making himself available in the social media/computer era to discuss his certificates. PSE and PF should take a lesson on how to engage their customers, especially younger tech savvy collectors who expect insight and explanations through social media. We have debated many of PF and especially PSE certs here, but don't recall ever the guy or gal who expertized or graded the stamp involved in discussion. Occasionally we have experts here who have done consulting work, but I don't recall a PSE expertizer discussing a particular stamp they personally worked on

I am admittedly not an expert on these early classics yet, but I am learning. Without knowing "the two dot rule", I thought all Type 1 had complete left and right shells. I stand. corrected. Further, I don't pretend to be "a specialist worth his/her sallt", but just a collector wanting to learn. Flexing our muscles of knowledge superiority is no way to entice new collectors to this forum, or more troublesome yet, to philately in general.

Reededge -- Yes, you will see occasional snotty condescension on this forum, and in philately in general, but I urge you to disregard it if you can. Because there is also an enormous amount of knowledge available on SCF. Where else will you find an expert willing to explain the reasoning behind one of his certs? And if nothing else, you can always count on our moderator to provide a useful stampsmarter.com link to help you find your way. Cheers and happy collecting!
