Alf Proysen (1914-1970) the multi talented Norwegian, wrote and illustrated a series of children's books about the adventures of Mrs Pepperpot. She had remarkable powers, being able to shrink herself to a tiny size and she was then able to understand the languages of the animals. In the stamp issued for the 100th year after the author's birth, posted by Vayolene, she is telling a rat to behave. In the German translation of her adventures she is called Mrs Teaspoon, because that is her size when shrunk. |

The Polish legend of Count Popiel is quite shocking: he was a cruel count who was not loved by his people. When they revolted and wanted him gone, he fled to a great tower. But the mice who lived there attacked and ate him! Poland 1986. Part of a set of stamps featuring children's books illustrated beautifully by Elzbieta Gaudasinska. |

The four striped mouse of southern Africa (Rhabdomys pumilio) is a pretty creature that lives in fairly arid regions and can survive even without water if it gets enough fresh vegetation. stamp of 1992 (Hi Idebee, It is indeed amazing how similar legends and fables can be, perhaps cultural ties go back further than we realize. It can be quite dangerous to be out and about as a striped mouse in Botswana: Barn owls (Tyto alba) also live there! The fledgling owls are already large and always hungry. |
