I am new to stamp collecting but have an extensive collection that I inherited from my father. His collection includes 1840s to 1990's. I am just beginning to catalog the stamps and need help in identifying the date of issue of a carmine colored 90cent Perry. Thanks for the help!  |

1870 was the first year of this issue I believe. There were a couple of different printings so it all depends on the one you have. I'm a rank amateur at Banknotes but I'd take a stab at Scott 191. Even though the block of 4 you show isn't centered very well I have to imagine there aren't many blocks of 4 of this high denomination left in existence. Don't break it up! |

I agree with Scott #191. The biggest "tell" is in the perfs. You might be able to find the cancel on a Continental printing but probably highly unlikely on a National. |

Thanks for the help! So appreciated. TX Stamp, it's going to take me months just to catalog and take photos of all of the stamps, but I promise to post some of the rarer ones. At one time, my dad had every issued U.S. stamp in his collection except for the upside down aero plane. He sold a few, but enjoyed the rest too much to sell. |

Maybe every issued face-different stamp. Or possibly every stamp, not counting special printings and rare grills. He did not have every issued stamp by catalog number unless your dad is Benjamin Miller or Bill Gross. |

Do not worry about the push back in the last two posts, philately is a great hobby and sounds like you have been passed a great start. The scope of information to learn can sometimes be a bit overwhelming but there are plenty of folks here who are willing to help you.

Actually I would like to see stamps from the collection because it is very much possible that there is rarely seen material in it. It would not be the first time that great material has surfaced unexpectedly.
I concur with keeping the block intact. I do not see multiples of these 90 centers that often. Very cool. |

That block of four is a $1500.00 - $2000.00 cat value no matter what number it is and probably a high cat cost to a used block of four collector (my pockets are not that deep)

Wish my dad would have known about this forum before his passing! He would have loved connecting over the love of stamps. He rarely found anyone that could even understand his passion for stamps. What would be the best forum topic to create to share some of his other interesting U.S. historical stamps? |

Pre 1940 this is the place. After 1940 there is a section for US Modern stamps. There are also forums for world wide collectors, Canadian and Australian as well. |

Question: The U.S. Specialized cat from 2014 I have gives a used VF block of 4 as $775. Has it really increased to 1500 - 2000? |

My 2017 Scott specialized lists a used block of 4 @ $2000. Had a very quick search on the bay and doo see a few blocks there. Asking prices seem to bee $600 - $1000. Didn't see any in the sold tab. There is also a chap with a block of 8 asking $1700+ |
