I remember a c1990-1991 photograph of a clever young woman carrying a sign that read:

"WHAT IF KUWAIT EXPORTED BROCCOLI ?"

She inspires me to ask: If Norman Rockwell had been a favored local artist of the stamp collectors of Bolivia or Bosnia or Botswana, would whole sets of stamps have been issued (as above) by Comoros, Sharjah, Romania, Dominica, Niger, Grenada, Turks & Caicos, Cook Islands, or the Central African Republic ?

That's like blaming the Beatles for being covered by Alvin and the Chipmunks.

I couldn't interpret Geoff's comment, it had an enigmatic suggestion (for me).
I watched an "Australian Story" recently on ABC about our artist Vincent Fantauzzo, and I think one critic, explained he was rather an illustrator than an "artist".
I put that down to (correctly or not) "elitism", yet, with some of the countries examples of Rockwell, the colours etc, do him no justice, and do look shallow,
and I could feel that "Reader's digest" connotation.

You want elitism ?

A far better insult is to describe his work as "accessible".

Mr. Rockwell's easel in previous post,
The last self portrait has been identified,
Pablo Picasso "Bust of a woman and self portrait"

So that US stamp has 7 11 self Portraits in the vignette !

ID : Thanks Jill

Nothing wrong with design and illustration - it's a perfectly respectable job. Indeed, some rather average illustrators - Warhol, Banksy - have made a lot of money from it, as well as convincing some rich people that their work is "art". Personally, I find looking at Rockwell's work akin to eating a bar of marzipan. As for Fantauzzo, I'm with the Aussie critic and his "this is to painting what lip-syncing is to singing" comment.

I do blame the Beatles for covering the Miracles and the Marvelettes, and I'd rather listen to the Chipmunks than the Fab Four.
