This is part of a page from an old collection that I bought. The stamps are from the state of Soruth. Apparently the former owner wrote the Stanley Gibbons number above each stamp. I do not have a SG catalog and am trying to reconcile the numbers with my Scott catalog. I have written what I believe to be the Scott numbers below, and noted the paper type.
The stamps in the middle row appear to be individually printed as opposed to part of a sheet. Are these proofs? What do I have here?
Any help is appreciated.

RM,
Our two main India specialist members, appear to be on an hiatus at the moment, (Tony and Joy)
I cannot assist, however the Stanley Gibbons numbers offered, do not match my catalogue, so I cannot transcribe.
Your numbers appear to be from an old SG catalogue.
The "uglies" as they are affectionately referred to, are a highly specialised field with lots of forgeries.
Your reference to the Scott catalogue is your best bet for the time being,
the legitimacy of your material is beyond my knowledge.

Tip: you can always search this valuable forum, Tony did do some wonderful posts on "The Uglies"

The SG numbers are not actual.
In the middle row you have to identify the paper type.
1878 Laid paper with lines wide apart, imperf.

1886 (a) On toned laid paper with lines close together.
(b) Wove paper

These are all genuine stamps.

Can't help with Scott numbers sorry, but the stamps appear to be:

First line - SG16 One anna green (issued 1878-86) if laid lines are wide apart, 16b if closer together.

Second line - SG 17 4 annas vermillion, SG 18 4 annas brown, SG 17b 4 annas scarlet on bluish white (should be laid paper - are you sure it's wove?)

Third line - 1886 perforated issue. If definitely wove paper these are SG 22 and 23.

Thanks to all of you for the help!

Rod's link to the general discussion on Soruth stamps was very useful in understanding the state's stamps and answered some of my questions.

It seems clear that although the previous owner wrote the Stanley Gibbons numbers above the stamps, his numbers were either wrong, or more likely, just from a very old SG catalog before the numbers were changed. I believe that collection was put together in the 1930s.

Peter's response was very helpful, particularly the scan of a sheet printed as a strip of 5 stamps. It is now clear that the stamps in the middle row came from either the first or fifth positions in the strips of 5.

Peter: I checked the paper again on SG # 17b. It does appear to be laid bluish-white paper, not wove as I first thought.

Scott's does not provide a # for SG #18, the 4a in brown, but at least I now know that they are all genuine, and regular issues, not proofs.

I just recently bought a Scott's specialty album for India. I am in the process of combining my collection, the old collection I bought years ago, and odds and ends of other Indian States stamps that I have picked up into the new album. I will have more questions to post here soon.

Thanks again, everyone!
