I guess as pairs of stamps with and without the surcharge are listed in the catalogue some unsurcharged single stamps from surcharged sheets would have been sold at post offices for postal use.
The 1d Yellow without overprint is a fiscal stamp. For postal use, it was overprinted with the word "postage" or overprinted and surcharged with "postage half-penny". It is a distinct possibility that the cancel is not genuine. Clive

Thank you all for the input. I'm inclined to agree with Clive. The cancel seems too perfect compared to other stamps I have from the period. Cheers! Mick
