What do the different coloured dots on the stamps signify?

I asked the same question in the last posting about the collection. Obviously it appears that red is used, but blues and yellows?

I'm not too sure what the dots signify, I'll check tomorrow if there's a legend or something in some of the documents.

Yellow - Lightly hinged
Green - Hinged
Blue - no gum
Red- used

I note that the 12d is a plate proof as well as the copy of 10c black brown. They both have SPECIMEN overprints.
