I have a boat load of US Rev Documentary stamps and I'm just getting around to organizing them and prepare album pages. I prefer to make my own.
I've been struggling with my OCD on this. How many of you, who collect US Rev Documentaries organize them (particularly "first issue") by subject, rather than by design? In other words all the express together, all the playing card, proprietary and so on regardless of design?
The few revenue albums I've seen all seem to organize them by design.
I know there's no "wrong" way to organize them as long at he who is collecting them likes it but any thoughts or comments?
I collect mainly first issue and look for cancels, margin imprints, printing anomalies and other varieties, multiples, and generally well-centered, attractive examples that appeal to me. I keep them in nice binders on Vario pages organized by Scott number.
In general I have not collected the first three issues for several decades. However, when I did, I separated out the Proprietary and Playing Card stamps and moved them closer to the RBs and RFs. I integrated my second and third issues to show the before and after colors of those denominations where a color change was instituted.
In short, I believe that organizing by title on the documentary stamps is a reasonable way to organize them. The insight you may derive is that some of those stamps were not be printed by the late 1860's and therefor you will not see the thick paper, the so-called experimental silk papers on those.
Go with your thoughts and share with us what you learn in the process.
My personal collection is on commercially available (Palo) hingeless pages because they are convenient.
I have seen a few much older album pages where they were organized by subject.
I suggest you make an example page to see if you like them. Scan your stamps and put them in the appropriate spots and it will even be in color. You can play around and see what looks best to you.
I do not collect US revenues, However, with all my other disciplines, (say Canadian Revenues etc) I like to follow the set out / order as shown in the Catalogue I use for them.
I find it easy to mesh the two, when they follow each other.
Of course, these pages aren't quite done yet, just a mock up to see how they look... I have some adjusting to do both to positions and verbiage. I seem to have plenty of time as I'm working from home and I have all that commute time (~3.5 hours daily) to spend on better activities :)
