1890-S Columbian Covers

Here, to continue where I left off over a week ago, are three UPU covers, paying 3, 4, and again 4 rates (5c / half ounce) respectively --

Turning now to some registered UPU covers: first, a nice pair from the same correspondence, showing a magenta Port Huron cancel sending letters on their way to a cleric who moved from Italy to Belgium. Sender appears to have had a conscious interest in displaying different Columbians, something you find often during this period. Each pays one rate (1/2 oz.) @ 5c postage, plus registry fee of 8c.

First cover below pays 2 rates UPU (1 oz. @ 5c per 1/2 oz.) plus international registry fee of 8c. Second cover is my personal favorite, franked for same 1 oz. postage and registry plus 3c overpay. The overpayment is hardly surprising -- 5th day of issue mailing date of January 5, 1893 (Argentine, Kans.) must make this one of the earliest six-franking Columbian covers in existence. The sender can be forgiven the enthusiasm over this brand-new phenomenon, the U.S. commemorative stamp series!

I wonder if the ship this envelope would have been carried on out of New York was the first sailing since the Columbian issue was released. The latest NYC registry stamp on reverse is Jan. 9, and there is no receiver mark. Can someone confirm / disconfirm?

Here are a couple of international printed matter (3rd class) mailings. First-class cancel on cover to Argentina may be inappropriate; cover was sent unsealed, per regulations. The CR in oval on the New York-Sweden mailing stands for "Circular Room."

Interesting that, unlike 1st class letter and post card rates, the 3rd class UPU rate at this time was the same as for domestic mailings.
