I'm trying to understand the pattern at the bottom of this stamp. How would this happen? Have you seen it before?

It looks like it came off another piece of envelope while soaking a bunch of stamps

Looks like a security pattern from the inside of an envelope transferred somehow.

I agree it looks like a pattern from a security envelope. If this were the case I would expect the transfer of blue, but a transfer of white also occurred then, and who prints white on a white envelope? Look close and you'll see there is color in the undamaged margin which gradients to pure white where the pattern exists.

I believe the top half of the stamp has absorbed some brown stain, leading you to your erroneous conclusion.

The back is completely white. Also, I checked the stamp to several others and there does not appear to be any brown staining.
