Coil Stamp Authentication Is Too Hard

I didn't post that. I didn't save that picture. revcollector is responding to the enlarged holes on the pair.

What's the basis of saying the perf holes line up exactly? From what I can see, they don't, and correcting the image skew wouldn't change that; the center row of holes is aligned differently than the others.

The more I read this thread, the more I realize what a total "mishegausse" US coil collecting is and how glad I am to not have any interest in them.

I wouldn't agree with that sentiment. There are a lot of classic stamps that take work. I wouldn't write them off. Early 1c Franklins, most Banknotes, grills, reprints, 24c shades - they are all hard. To me, doing the work makes them more interesting, not less. Admittedly, in some cases the final call needs to be an expertizing service. But what a nice feeling when something comes back authentic. In cases where I can do it myself - so much the better. Yes, coils are a major pain, but they seem easy compared to some of the plating skills I've seen on this forum.

If the #449 is fault-free you've got a very nice stamp, well worth getting a certificate. The used #412 singe, due to condition, may be worth over $100 so would be good to get a graded cert on that one.

I finally got the certs back on these. I didn't send them all because the catalog price wasn't worth it, but the ones I sent all checked out as good coils except the pair which rev and others thought were fake. They were right. The 412 came back authentic, but they didn't grade it because they found a "tiny corner crease".
