Can An Experienced Collector Tell Me What Is The Scott Number Of This Stamp? Is It Valuable?

I'm trying to navigate myself through the Scott US Specialized catalog. I have this stamp (correction: the image of the stamp, not the stamp itself)

Now what? What is the SCOTT number for this stamp? Does someone know or have a guess?

Thanks, Don! The plate number made it easy, I did not even know you could search by plate number. But without the plate number it would be hard to even have an estimate or an idea of the Scott number, right? Or no?

Nio - You are looking at a collection sold by NYStamps. The collection contains mostly badly damaged stamps. Do a search on this forum for NYStamps before you deal with them.

My friend, based upon your numerous recent posts I might kindly suggest that you slow down your efforts because you appear to be using the "shotgun" approach to collecting US and the only thing that will come of that is a sore wallet and bad feelings. TRUST ME.

In some cases (such as with watermark differences) you cannot determine the catalog number without actually examining the stamp.

I recommend investing time in learning the stamps AND learning whom you are buying from.

I suspect a better investment than this $20 accumulation of stamps — many of which appear unfortunately to have been damaged hopelessly by tape etc., — would be a specialist perforation gauge, perhaps the Sonic Labs one which goes for less. You will then be in a position to work through the contents of the other album you purchased to validate the identifications of the the stamps therein, and start to build an organized want list.

You are BTW on the right track using the Scott catalogue to identify the design type of a stamp (the "A157"). And then you would use a perforation gauge, perhaps watermark fluid if and when needed, and other observational techniques to determine what stamp you have in hand from among the possibilities. The Stampsmarter site also is a big help in many particular instances.
