Well, I'm not (that) old, I don't have a bike (yet) but I do have stamps. I am finding that sheltering in place has given me more time than ever before to focus on one thing that really transports me from the concerns of Covid-19. Ironically, the time is available even though I'm spending as much time working remotely as I did before the stay in place provision went into effect. For me spending time with my collection is offering a necessary reset and I'm making and finding time to do it. It makes me think of all those accounts of Franklin Delano Roosevelt working on his stamp collection in the midst of dealing with the crises of the Great Depression and World War Two. My experience also makes me wonder if the stamp collecting community should talk more about this intangible benefit the hobby offers and just how to communicate this to people looking for something to help them unplug and find some sense of calm.
Nothing clears my mind and calms my nerves as effectively as an evening of stamp collecting.
My workplace has been closed for a month now, and it looks as though we'll be offline until at least early May. I might get my collection all caught up by the time I am called back--a dream some 25 years in the making. Working towards that goal has saved my sanity in these uncertain times.
I remember an old rock song of the 70's by some one called "Uriah heep" (or something like that!), it was named "Too old to rock and roll, too young to die". At 61, I feel just that way! Luckly, I've got my stamps (and cinderellas!) and, most important, the Stamp People. Being locked down, alone, for a number of weeks (and some more ahead), the internet contact with people from all around the world (Rod, Michael...)and phone talks with people, is an open window. Surfing everyday on the fòrums, seeing what fellows have posted and looking forward for the day when post will work again I'll be able to pursue my collections, it's something that keeps me alive and mentaly active. For all this, when all this is over, I'll be forever grateful to "Stamp people".
Quote: "Too old to rock and roll, too young to die".
was a song by Jethro Tull, I believe. Uriah Heep was my favourite band, at the time, I flew to England to see them.
Genesis of the names Jethro Tull : He perfected a horse-drawn seed drill in 1700 Uriah Heep is a fictional character created by Charles Dickens in his novel David Copperfield. A slanderer.
I'm semi-old (56) and I've got plenty of stamps. I lost my job a couple of weeks ago and filed for unemployment for the first time in my life. I was working remotely during the last 3 weeks leading up to the job loss due to Covid-19. I wasn't really having fun with the job anyway, an obvious sign to move on. On the brighter side, I've been able to devote more time and energy to my stamp collection. Last week, I designed and printed pages for the US commemoratives of the 1960s. I started on the 1970s commemoratives yesterday and will probably work on the 1980s once those are finished. I still need to do the definitives for the Prominent Americans, Americana, and Great Americans. With the loss of job income, I've had to scale back my purchases but am still picking up a little here and there mostly filling in the holes with inexpensive items. I've also worked on keeping my website up-to-date and adding more features, mostly on the backend programming side.
This "thing" that none of us has ever seen before has tested my sanity, but I'm keeping busy and not losing sight of what a wonderful hobby we have during times like this. Having y'all here has helped with that. Thank you!
I am an amateur songwriter and this thread inspired me to write a short song.
There's a bad virus around or so they tell me And my grandkids won't come by to smell me All the restaurants, bars and movies closed 'Cause everyone's afraid to get exposed
But me I have no worries at all I'll never have to climb the walls I've got my tongs and glass and lamp 'Cause I'm old and I got stamps
Been sheltered in place since the snow came down Then Corona virus struck and closed my town But ebay and PayPal are working just fine So there's plenty to do to pass the time
And me I have no worries at all I'll never have to climb the walls I've got my tongs and glass and lamp 'Cause I'm old and I got stamps
