I was going through some totes and I came across some paperback books. The writing on some of them are faded and hard to read. This book said Austria and Bayern. Some of the stamps on pages 6, 7, 8, and 9 are different. Anyway, has anyone ever seen stamps hinged on pages like this? Was this a common thing in the 50's? The hand written date on the book says 1955.

Very nice collections of Àustria and Bayern. Yes, hinging stamps was common place and the most usual collecting way up to the sixties of last century. It still is among used stamps col·lectors, like myself.

There is some system to this madness. First you have Back of Book stamps form Austria (mostly offices abroad and newspaper stamps). Then stamps from Armenia, then Azerbaijan, and the last is Bayern (there is 1 Batum stamp in the mix with Bayern). It is probably just a part of somebody's worldwide collection in a homemade album, going in alphabetical order. Maybe in some languages Armenia comes next after Austria (or the person did not know how to spell Armenia, remember there was no Google back in the 50s).

Actualy, the first stamps are Italian occupation stamps of what today is Slovenia and Croatia, as well as Eastern Italy (Trieste, Goritzia,,,). By then (1918) Austrian Empire. You, also, have 6 stamps from Baden (SW Germany).

This was common practice from the early days.Sometimes they were childrens collections made up by adults,or beginners collection.
The French booklets below date from 1929.The manuscript writing and annotations were often perfectly done with a quill pen.The stamps found in them were common types ,although exceptions may occur.Interesting cancels can be found.
They may be nice keeping intact if one does not need to put the stamps in another album.

I found 34 books in all. The covers almost feels like a pallet sheet. As you can see on the one cover, it is going to be an adventure. To be honest, I don't know SQUAT about stamps. I guess I should have paid more attention when my dad was going through them over the years. Thanks for all the input!!! It is appreciated!!! As I go through the different books, I will share more.

Yeah, but look at the paper they're mounted on. I'd have them soaked off those hinges and onto something that's not nearly as acidic as quick as I could. I bet each of those were white when they started...

Quoted for truth.

I would first scan each page to retain the provenance and am enough of a hoarder to also keep the books themselves away from the stamps.
