Can someone tell me whether the attached stamps are the ones which have been issued in 1961 but could not be used for franking anymore due to the Indian re-claim of the territory ? Thank you

Withdrawn: thanks for your question. The top stamp is Scott #RA17. The 2019 Mundifil catalogue for former Portuguese colonies lists it as #20 in the Imposto Portal section. Mundifil gives an issue date of March 31, 1960.

I have the lower stamp, and also a 1.50 value showing a bird feeding its young. Neither is listed in Scott or Mundifil. However, both are listed in my old, falling apart, 1982, edition of Catalogo Eladio de Santos. Eladio says they were issued in 1961, but does not give a specific date of issue. The Indian aggression occurred in early December, 1961.

Portuguese India stamps were valid for use through January, 1962, but likely were tolerated a while longer. In 1962, Portugal issued the sports set and the malaria stamp for all colonies, including India. Those of course were not released in India.

Hope this helps.

@Steve

Thanks for you answer. From all information I have gathered since the $40 and $1.50 were kind of unissued in the sense of not be usable anymore due to the Indian occupation. That is at least what Michel German catalogue says and various other sources. Moreover it seems the 20 Centavos, $40 and $1.50 stamps were overprinted with Indian currency. The overprints seem to have been intended as tax stamps, but again, were not used.

I have written to an Indian philatelic study group to hopefully find out more.

withdrawn: please let us know what you find out. As an aside, I know someone here in Denver who is active in an Indian Study Circle or Group. They have a Facebook page.
