Scott 354 - Flyspecking 101

Hi guys
You all know me as a flyspecker and it can drive your head crazy..haha
If you want to become a flyspecker, just remember 2 things as I have told the local stamp club I belong to...If you follow these rules, you will become a flyspecker.

1 - See what is there that should not be.
2 - See what is not there that should be,

Anyways, was looking at this Canada Scott 354 "United Nations ICAO" stamp and there was a letter missing....See stamp below.


The letter "Z" is missing in the word "organization"..See below.


Shouldn't it look more like below..??

This looks more like an error in design to me. If the flame were wider, this design would have worked. Your 'Z' is a little bit wide, but your point is well made.

Someone decided this was "close enough for government work", and you called them out.

For me the missing letter is part of the design. It is a very clever design. Just because
the stamp is bilingual. In french you need a S for organisation. In english, a Z for organisation.

And perhaps you are correct that the designer or engraver wanted users to see the missing letter, but I still believe the image would have been a little more effective with a wider flame

Since about 1920 the use of an s or a z has been acceptable in English English. My wife wrote a text book about 7 years ago and the British publisher changed all the ise to ize.

So when this stamp was designed the z or s would have been appropriate. However to include the z/s would have ruined the design so I think that the "missing" z was a considered choice and obviously not an error. Everyone who reads that inscription would mentally fill in the Z or S.
