Hi, I have a question about a postmark on a registered letter from the UK to New York. On the back is a postmark "B" with date 01. April 1882. I never saw this postmark and nobody have information about it. Can anybody help me?? Is there probably some publications about these postmarks? Back: Front: Many thanks for Your efforts Juergen

This large "B" marking was applied upon the arrival of this cover to the New York Post Office registry division. These large letters (B, C, D, and U are known) were used in 1882-1883 by the registry clerk who was responsible for insuring that the registered letter was properly sealed.
I have a small survey of covers with this marking and related markings. Your date of APR 1 / 1882 is the earliest date I have seen and recorded for this marking. |

Hi mml1942, thx for this information. so I see a little more clearly. Do You know whether there is some publications about this markings? Or an article in one philatelic magazine? Or is it undiscussed until today? Regards Juergen |

The only article that focuses directly on these markings and some of their successors is:
"The 1882-1902 Registered "Letter" Marks of New York City and Some Collateral Information", by Jere Hess Barr American Philatelic Congress Handbook No 18,, 1952, p 70-74

Hi, many thanks for Your help!! The American Philatelist from 1946 I have downloaded. The American Congress Handbook #18 I have found to purchase.
The examples are very interesting. These are always registered letters to foreign destinations. The difference to mine is, that it is a cover FROM a foreign destination. Seems to me there is much to investigate.
let's see what I make of it.
Best wishes

Juergen: I attempted to contact you via email/PM on this site but you were not accepting emails. I was going to send you a PDF with Barr's article. If you want to reconsider this, I can still send the article. Or if you are a member of the American Philatelic Society, these issues of the Congress Book are in their Digital Library and available for downloading.
The website referenced shows primarily outbound foreign registered mail, but these markings appear on both domestic and foreign mail, outbound and inbound, although in my experience, they are less common on inbound mail.
Barr notes that there seemed to be no Post Office records describing the use of these markings, and I have not recorded enough examples to draw any conclusions of my own.

Morning grisuhh62 and all, These "clerk markings" were used on domestic as well as foreign bound registered mail. I am working on a study of NYC markings on registered mail. Can you digitally share any earlier covers? Additional information on registered mail is available over on Stamp Smarter in the Registered U.S.A. section. http://stampsmarter.com/features/NYReg_Book.htmlBest regards and welcome to our digital community. @mml1942 thank You for Your try! But, if I am right, because I am a new member here, I can not Mail with other members at the time. Thanks for Your offer about the article. I will look at the Library for it and then download it. @hoosierboy unfortunately this is the only cover I have scans of. It was an inquiry at my stamp society in Germany. I am sorry! Good luck for Your further research!! Regards Juergen |
