I just joined yesterday, so please excuse me if this is an incorrect posting. I'm interested in WWII Liberation Overprints and obliterates. My question: Is there a catalog or publication listing the various issues? If a standard does not exist, what would you recommend? Sorry, if this is a naive question, but I'm looking for ways to best educate myself on the topic. Thank you all in advance.

Maury lists the issues for France - many of which are rather dubious.

You should also be able to see them here (won't properly open in a tablet)

This is by no means a naive question.

But,I hope that for this field you have 3 things: deep pockets, a lot of knowledge and courage.
As far as I know, this is a mine-field. As Geof said, there are more forgeries that authentics and tend to be compiled by countries. A late friend of mine, about 30 years ago, compiled a 200 pages catalog just for Czech overprints and had to face a bitter controversy over the real character (real or forgery) of the overprints that he listed...
What I said: deep pockets, knowledge and courage...Knowing languages, other than English, can be a plus.

Thank you all for your insights and quick response. Doesn't sound like a good entry point into the hobby for an inexperienced collector. I was looking for something interesting with manageable volume, but never considered the forgery problem. Thank you again.

Fascinating subject, but definitely not an area for a beginning collector.

You could start with the mainstream issues by countries that commemorated the liberation, or maybe the Commonwealth victory stamps and see how it goes.

Or even the basic issues of the major countries in the war.

For Austria, Michel lists 2 separate areas:1.)Postwar (A. Soviet Zone -many overprints, B. American, British and French common issue - not overprinted, that I have seen) and 2.) Local issues - many overprints.

I would suggest going back in time and staying away from modern issues. Very modern commemorative issues of nearly every country are intended to take money from collectors.

Pre WW2 can be interesting if you can find the right country - The Baltic states perhaps ?

You just have to find a country that appeals to you and at the start does not cost too much. Then if you change your mind it will not have cost too much. Do some research before you get into it though.

One more point do not buy cheap damaged stamps. Even for low cost ones go for quality. Well centered with good perforations. Eventually you may find postal history is more interesting than the stamps themselves. I started with Canada 1937 to about 1980 but now hardly ever buy a stamp just postal history of WW2.

Finally enjoy yorself
