jogil thank you, I went through my 1 and 2 cent stamps and thought I had it sorted out but not with as much detail on all the plate usage.
It's when I moved on to the 3 cent stamp which I had concluded would be die I, they just don't look like a die I at all, actually much more like a Die II.
Below are three photos two 2 cent brown 166b Die I, 166 Die II and a 167 3 cent that the book never says which die it's from.
To my eye the three cent looks much more like Die II.
The 166b Die I has bald spots throughout the hair and beard, there's a small smiley in the ball and a small centre in the "P".
The 166 Die II has the bald spots filled in, there's a larger smiley and the centre in the "P" is larger.
If you look at the 3 cent which one does it look like?
I became even more confused when I moved on to the 4 cent.
