Regarding your 81R1E "patient stamp" -- see the exchange of postings on 12/1 and 12/2 between RLSNY and me about this exact same stamp. All of these postings are on page 190 of this thread. (I would provide a link, but I do not know how.)

To recap -- on 12/1, RLSNY posted this exact stamp stating that he had tentatively plated it to 81R1E -- and asked for confirmation of his plating.

An exchange of posts ensued about the stamp -- including my assessment of how to differentiate 81R1E from 81R1i -- and concluded with a confirmation that RLSNY's stamp was, in fact, from the Early state of the plate.

I know that RLSNY is a dealer -- so I presume that you purchased the stamp from him recently?

In any event -- if you read the exchange of postings between RLSNY and me from 12/1 and 12/2 about this particular stamp -- you should be able to differentiate 81R1E from 81R1i without too much difficulty.

In addition to the differences between 81R1E and 81R1i in the exchange between RLSNY and me -- other key things to looks for are as follows:

-- That partial recut at the upper end of the LIL was significantly weakened upon re-entry when 1E became 1i -- and the same goes for the 1 line in the ULT.

-- TFL is noticeably weaker on the intermediate state of 81R1 versus the early state.

-- As previously mentioned in my exchange with RLSNY -- the most definitive evidence of re-entry is that on 81R1 Inter state, there is a slight doubling of the LFL at a level just above the lower left rosette -- versus no doubling on 81R1 Early state.

You should apply the above criteria against all of your copies and see what you think about the state of the plate for each of them.

As an aside -- DSW is Dave Watt. He no longer plates -- but was a very active plater until he sold his 3c collection through Bennet (Sale #309 // Nov 10, 2006). You might still be able to view the Bennett sale catalogue for Watt's 3c collection if it is still posted on their website?

I have two potential 10As to plate this week. This one was identified as a 10A by the previous owner who has a 100% correct rate so far. I wouldn't have picked it out based on the color, but I'm going to give him the benefit of doubt and try to plate it. If anyone is feeling it, let me know any clue you'd like to pass on.

The second one is I believe correctly plated as 23L1, but whether E or L, I am not sure. Looking for expert opinions on this one. Thanks!

12L3 is what I got as well. Im pretty sure 10/10A's plates never showed that much wear/poor impression. What happens after strike three?

I caught the tail end of the previous discussion as I was making my post. I saw the comment about the strength of the upper left inner frame line recut and looked at my examples to compare.

I didn't realize that you were discussing the same position, let alone the exact same stamp!

I appreciate your sharing your knowledge on this forum.

I will look at mine again when I get back to a desktop computer. I am on my phone now.

I seem to remember that my example #2 didn't appear to have the right frame line extending below the lower frame line correctly and thought that it might actually be 21R1E, but I didn't have time to attempt to replace it.

I also remember seeing more of a doubling of the left outside frame line on one of the examples, but I was thinking that was the one that appeared to be Chase plated.

I'll try to look at the images on my phone again shortly as I won't be back into my office until either late today, tomorrow, or possibly Monday.

anyone have thoughts on the 23L1 above? I'm having trouble figuring early/intermediate/late. Color is nice orange brown, but the images online both at Stamp Smarter and at Stamp Plating are leaving me unsure.
