Classic Coins, I took a stab at plating the San Francisco pair I posted yesterday. With the help of the Plating Wizard I'm pretty sure the plating is 6L2E and 7L2E
(left stamp)6L2E should be a Scott #10A Relief A
(right stamp)7L2E should be a Scott #10A Relief B

Hi Moyock13 -- I believe that your San Francisco pair with the May 16 cds cancel are positions 1L1L and 2L1L. One of the tip-offs for plate 1 late is the heavy gouge in the upper right diamond block (URDB) -- which appears as a dark spot in the top half of the URDB. Both of your stamps show this characteristic clearly. After that it becomes a process of elimination across the top row of plate 1 late. Positions 1L1L and 2L1L are the only pair where the guide dots match up. Each of these positions have some very distinctive features as well. For example -- on 1L1L, the top frame line is very distinguishing -- starting off low above the U. S. -- and then abruptly bending upward above the P of POSTAGE -- and staying high for the duration of its travel eastward toward the right frame line. Likewise, on position 2L2L, there is an open comer at the upper left where the top frame line stops a trifle short of its intersection with the left frame line. Hope this helps a bit -- and that you enjoy your plating journey with the 1851 3 cent imperforates!

Moyock13, I concur with ioagoa that the San Francisco pair is 1L1L and 2L1L.

Just plated this 27-28R8 pair a few days ago that I acquired three years ago. When I placed it face down on the scanner glass, I realized for the first time that it has a double stitch watermark (reverse image enhanced).

Classic Coins, Nice!

What characteristics of the stamps helped you determine the plating?
I see the position marks, no inner frame lines, doesn't look like a lower frame line on 27R8.

Rich60, very nice!

Is the lower frame line on the 11A doubled or just thick?

Hi Moyock13
I think it is just thick. I don't see any other disturbance in the impression.

Thanks
Rich

Thanks, Moyock13.

The position dots helped immensely, especially since the one on the right stamp is outside the right frame line.

I actually spent about an hour trying to plate the 27-28R8 pair to plate 6 or 7 since the frame lines didn't look very heavy like is typical on plate 8 stamps. When that failed, I went to plate 8 and found 27-28R8 to be a good match for the position dots.

To absolutely confirm the positions, I compressed the image of the pair to 10 percent of original size vertically, and overlaid this image (below) on a vertically-compressed Chase print image. The left frame line on 27R8 is quite distinct when viewed this way.

Rich, Nice stamps. Thanks for showing them.

I really like that Matagorda Txs cancel. I've never seen Texas abbreviated that way on a postmark.

Is the Auburn (plate 4) stamp plated?

My favorite 11A. 38L1L with a small plate scratch on the lower left.
