A friend is trying to determine where his Dad was stationed while in military service. All he has to work with is an envelope mailed in 1961 (Sept 7) with a return address of APO 238 and a "238" in the machine dial.

My few references deals only with APO locations in WW2. Is there is similar reference from this later period, and if so, can someone help with a location?

Thanks,
Mike

From "Geographic Locations of U.S. APOs, 1941-1984" compiled and edited by James Shaffer, 5th edition, published through the War Cover Club:

APO 238 was RAF Alconbury, Hunts. (counties of Huntingdon and Peterborough), England beginning 7/1/1955 and beyond 1965 with its conversion to a 5-digit APO 96238 in the zip code era.

There may be a newer edition, but that is what I have.

I was always envious of Alconbury. They had F-4 Phantoms while we only had F-100 Leadsleds at Lakenheath.
