Thread Bumped, dormant for 1 year.

I was re-reading this thread, and thought I'd offer, what is probably well known to us, but any new collectors, a Guaging Tip.

Instead of running your stamp up and down the perf guage with tongs.

Try Placing your stamp in an old Hagner piece, or a 102a Stock Card.
I do that, placing it on my mouse pad
Then you can run your gauge up and down the stamp, any side,
without damage etc.
Make sure your guage line match exactly across your teeth tips
and have the guage and teeth perfectly HORIZONTAL to each other.

You should be able to guage with in 1 tenth of a guage.
Great for badly punctured pin perfs etc.

A novice question: What does it mean American/Canadian gauge? Won't a stamp with perf 11 for example measure 11 in all gauges?

Guess.
A guage that has increments / guages that suit specific Canadian and American peculiar perforating spin spacings.

Yes. However as some members here have noticed, the cheaper plastic guages, may be out to a degree.

Thank you Rod.
What are "peculiar perforating spin spacings"? The shape of the perforation? Unique measures like perf 11.7 (a made-up example)?

Indeed Rob.
I recall "Wert" and Jogil discussing a really wide guaging examples in the early Canada catalogue of stamps.
