It's not necessarily wrong, or even surprising; the year used in copyright notice is the year of completion of the artwork forming the basis of the stamp, not the year of issue of the stamp. The underlying artwork probably was completed in 2001.
It happens on US stamps too. The copyright year in the selvedge doesn't match the issue year. They copyright after they finalize the stamp design. The stamp may not be issued until months later at the earliest, resulting a year of issue a year later than the copyright year.
Very common thing Robert. As others stated there are many stamps where the images or designs are copyrighted in one year and issued at later years.
Too bad they seperated the red corners from the stamps. They definitely add to the overall appearance. Oh yes, its after 12pm down East. Happy Canada Day!
