It's also possible that the blue stripes were the real cancel on this stamp, and that the Detroit marking was a corporate receiving mark that just happened to fall on the stamp, and had nothing to do with the postal use at all.
revcollector - I think your observation that this may be a corporate receiving mark coincidentally striking the stamp is very likely. I have seen many receiving marks by companies, that look similar - and there would be no control on dates!
