On Wednesday July 8th I sold a collection to a buyer that had never purchased from me before. I'm always happy to see a new customer but on Thursday I received this;

I'm still deciding on my response and I wondered how others would respond?

I'm not thrilled by things like that but I've had some slow pays in the past and they typically come through eventually. If they miss, you file an unpaid item strike and get your credit and list again. You just have to remember to go back and do the unpaid item strike within 30 days or so.

Three weeks to pay seems excessive to me, but depends on how eager you are to unload these I guess. More generally, do you have payment terms in your listings? E.g. I put "please pay within 10 days or I will cancel the invoice so the stamps can be made available for another collector" on my Delcampe listings. That way, it's pretty clear to them. Although, haven't had to cancel an invoice as yet.

What is his feedback score, what does his feedback left for others look like, any feedback from seller about this type of activity in the past?

Most decent buyers would ask prior to even bidding, but many buyers these days feel entitled to do as they please with no regard for sellers.

Look at the whole picture and decide.

Personally, I have done things like this in the past and even took monthly payments from some.

That's a long wait, buyer is rude to expect you to reply ASAP so that (s)he can make you wait three weeks for payment! I have asked for such favours in the past, and also given them. I'd give them the benefit of doubt and let it play out, nothing being yet lost.

This is the type of thing that the buyer should have given you the courtesy of asking before they committed themselves to the purchase. You are running a business with terms and conditions.

If it were me I would say no since no prior arrangements were made. My 2 cents for the day

Rude and unfair to people willing to abide by the terms.

File a non paying bidder report with eBay if the buyer doesn't pay after a few days. A winning bid on eBay is a legal contract to buy the item and pay in a specified number of days.

Pretty tacky. Agree that if the buyer had sent a message stating that they'd like to bid but would like to know if delayed payment would be acceptable ahead of time this would likely not be an issue.

As a seller definitely will not mail to that address and relist it.

These type of situations seem to go out of shape into a non payment problems. Plus eBay gives you a penalty for not sending on time. So it is back to eBay trying to sort out another mess....

Sounds like a situation that will happen with Managed Payments! This exact situations is what I expect from managed payments. Now the looser buyers can do what they want and our items will never see payment. It just sounds like one big mess coming our way!

I sell on Stamporama and have one buyer who does the same thing they do always pay just have to hang on. As I am not a dealer it doesn't bother me.
At the moment due to the covid-19 and the haphazard postal system I have quite a lot of lots to post off which I have not yet invoiced if the person is in a hurry for the lots they send me a message.

KRelyea,

Why not just politely ask Nancy why is there a delay in the payment?

Maybe she's going through some tough financial issues at the moment, and is too embarrassed to say so?

Why assume the worse?

If Nancy is going through some tough financial issues at the moment why is she bidding on things she cannot pay for and perhaps causing tough financial issues for a seller?

Perhaps she bid on the lot before the issue presented itself?
