Most likely part of the cancellation.

A machine cancel (which could also surely be a parcel postmark?) perhaps?

The perfin looks like XL.

This stamp has only been overprinted "MOROCCO / AGENCIES // 50 / CENTIMES." The shape and size - it is much too big - of the five is not that of that overprint. Also, the 0 and most of "CENTIMES" should have been visible. In short: this stamp does not exist with such an overprint unless it is a private overprint. As the previous posters wrote, the 5 likely is part of the cancellation.

This stamp was part of the GB 1934-36 definitives. SG446

Yes, and the only official overprint on this stamp is Morocco Agencies SG221, overprinted "MOROCCO / AGENCIES // 50 / CENTIMES" for use in the French protectorate of Morocco, issued 15-9-1936.

Conclusion: it cannot be an inverted official overprint, as the only one that exists has a different type of overprint.

Hello members,

What ever it is still is a 5 inverted. Is this an error? If it's part of a cancellation is still inverted or can it be an inverted surcharge. Who can give more information about this stamp. Mara

Nothing unusual here. There is no overprint.

The perforated initials (perfin) indicate that this stamp was used for business mail. The upside down "5" Of the cancel simply indicates that either the stamp was inverted on the envelope, or the canceller was held in an upside down manner when used.

@Mara,

No British surcharged stamps exist. Only overprints for use at foreign post offices or by the military and two Victorian stamps that had their face values overprinted on the stamps. Some of those have a face value in a different currency, but never a surcharge. For SG 446 there exists just one such overprint.

Since the stamp has the perfin (punched holes) XL, it is unlikely this was a private overprint.

bookbndrbob's explanation is the most likely one.
