Hi! I have just got some Country Definitives in but don't know what to make of the one after an extensive internet search and burrowing through Scott's catalogue. In the photo the one on the left is the regular colour but the one on the right is definitely not and there is no alternate colour listed anywhere that I can find. Anyone know what it is?

"Wilding", as in the photographer, Dorothy Wilding. Your stamp has simply changed colour over time, as a result of light or other damage.

Thanks GeoffHa - for the correction on the Wilding issue and for the thoughts on fading....It seems to me it is actually a different colour though, not merely a faded hue of the same colour which I think it would have to be if it was just exposure or some other damage which I agree can be quite the change. Perhaps you are correct, though, and I appreciate the answer!

I concur with a color changeling for three reasons. First, it is a used stamp. Second, it is unlikely that after decades a new unfound color would now be discovered. Third, purples are susceptible to color fade. http://stampsmarter.com/learning/Ar...gelings.html

Thanks 51studebaker! That is an excellent link, too. I was thinking it just might be some unusual colour that my resources were unaware of but if no one is aware of it then agreed. The colour is too different to not have been noticed by someone, somewhere in the long intervening time since those very common and popular stamp series were released. I'm used to fading but not changes of colour completely to another colour.

Thanks again for the great link.

Mystery considered solved then with many thanks.

Since blue is commonly the color most resistant to fading by exposure to light, this stamp was most likely exposed to some chemical to give it the more reddish appearance, IMO.

Thanks bookbndrbob. Since I just received it yesterday and have no idea of where it's been at since 1969 that is very likely. For those of us who remember the days before WHIMIS was even a concept, "Better Life through Chemistry" meant many things were exposed to all sorts of chemicals...

I shall keep it as an example of a colour changeling and reminder of such possibilities :-)
