Going through a bulk Guinea lot I recently acquired, and found something interesting not indicated in either Scott or Michel.
This is a 3-stamp set commemorating the Tokyo Olympic Games of 1964 by overprinting a 1963 sports set in either orange or red. Michel lists the two color overprint sets separately, but Scott only has one listing, saying that the overprints are either orange or red.
What neither catalog points out is that the difference is more than just the overprints themselves. On the red overprint stamps, there is also a red wash across the entire stamp, whereas there is none on the orange-overprinted stamps. This is consistent across 10+ complete sets of the stamps.
I suppose it's possible that this is unintentional and a printing anomaly if all the sets I have came from the same sheet or press run, but a brief perusal of
ebay appears to confirm that it is consistent.
Regardless, it makes for an interesting contrast.
