When I see lots like this it makes me realize how much "higher catalog value" stuff is just out there sitting... in stagnant or forgotten collections, dealer inventories, etc. that is rarely cycled into active collections. I saw a hundred or so things that would take me years to acquire because of budget/cost. Oh well, it reinforces the old adage "collect for the fun of it"

"As for flipping it, it's really not the kind of lot to buy for any other reason"

It might be the only reason you would buy it, but there are people out there who would buy it to own it.

You do realize it literally only takes one stamp to bump a collection from 5k to 25k. Perhaps the collection is still worth many more multiples of what you are all pontificating. Maybe there is an A grill lurking in there like a scott 80a or something, and one bidder was ready to take it to 100k, and that blew out the others's budget. Then, they got a deal of the century...

I can't imagine that there are very many collectors willing to spend $30,000 just to own this lot. And yes, there MIGHT be some great rarity mixed in, but those occurrences are VERY few and far between.

I think we all need to acknowledge at least two people thought there was something of value in this lot.

Whether they have lots of disposable income and wanted to spend the winter attacking those pages one stamp at a time, or for resale, or cuz they think there is a decent chance of a rare variety/grill/shade, whatever.

I wish them well and hope they find plenty of value in their lot; regardless of which currency they are measuring it in.

It would also be nice to know what it was they saw

So we come down to one of two point of views about this auction lot .

On one hand the buyer saw enough of the lot to justify the price because of the hidden gems that is buried in it .

On the other hand someone decided it would be a fun lot to work on and viewed the entertaintment value as something to enjoy .

So as mentioned above maybe we will never know what the buyer was making his decision on .

I highly doubt it was a case of a heavy finger on the keyboard during the auction .

Apropos video about speculation...

There might be a rarity,
might there not?
Or maybe some gold,
if I might be so bold.
A stamp of great value,
don't be so shallow.
Could be one-of-a-kind,
at least in my mind.
Who knows what could be,
according to me.

But that's half the fun in this hobby, chasing the dream. Every time you sit down with new stamps you know in the back of your mind you probably won't find anything to write to the editors about but you check them all anyways. It's collections like this that are wonderful for the hobby. Seeing material like this fetch this kind of money and discussion is what keeps us all hunting. The majority of collectors have found at least one diamond in the rough and it gives us all a bit of hope that when we pass our collections along there might be a chance to leave a few nuggets to loved ones, whether it be money or keeping interest in the hobby.
