Here is some interesting information on Crane & Company which has supplied paper for printing to the different U.S. banknote companies and to the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP):
The Crane facilities are local to me in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. Locals are not big fans right now. Crane stationary was purchased by Mohawk Paper in 2017 with promises to put money into facilities and everyone would keep their jobs. Mohawk was given large tax incentives. That changed quickly and Crane Stationary let everyone go, closed the facilities and moved production to New York. Familiar story actually.
On a more positive note the Dalton facilities are quite amazing and historic to view. The Crane family built multiple large estates in the 19th century with park-like grounds and some of them are visible from the street with amazing architecture and gardens.
Note: I purchased a large lot of Crane family estate material at a local auction several years ago. Loaded with old black and white photos of the Factory delivery trucks and workers, receipts for a Crane V-12 Cadillac sedan etc.. Really interesting. $25 for three large cartons which I donated to a local historical society.
