I've finally managed to find my Collect British Postmarks book. I'm not sure there's I can be of much help but I'll try. What I see visible is " ___STERN D. O." and it looks like part of another letter after the O.

Anyone have an idea what the D.O. might stand for? The first thing that comes to mind for me on the initial lettering would be EASTERN or WESTERN. With that possibly being preceded by another word. I'm not having much luck finding anything that looks like a match, anyone have any suggestions?

Off-Topic:

This is one of those instances when an electronic copy of a book would be so much more helpful than a hardcopy. You could spend hours thumbing through the book and never find it; but a computerized search of an ebook would take only a couple seconds.

It's also one of those rare things that can't be Googled.

Frustrating Indeed. but don't give up, CJD.

I am not much up on GB cancels but

D.O.?
District Of ?
District Office ?
Department Of ?

Is the character after the O an ornament of some sort possibly?

Is it a Travelling Post Office TPO cancel? (our RPO's) so would stand for Great Western Railway something? Didcot Office? I am reaching.

If it is a TPO (RPO) this is the TPO society:

I think District Office is probably a good bet. I finally found a couple using the D.O. notation but nothing so far that pairs up with the partial wording and only on single ring cancels so far.

CJ, I found this on ebay through Google - District Office is a good bet. The cancel is not quite the same, the black after "O" on your example is probably the start of those thick center rings common on British cancels.

The Glasgow looks to be a possibility. I'll look in the handbook when I get to the office tomorrow morning and see if I can confirm a double circle variety. I'll also see if I can come up with more info on the ones that Rod has posted.
