Found this nice pair and thought the centering would be hard to beat. Anyone recognize this cancel?

The three lines read Deposit Duty Excess and are traceable to the San Francisco Customs House according to an article that appeared in the September 1966 The American Revenuer. Go to the ARA website and they have a pdf of the Sept 1966 issue available and you can read the article on this somewhat frequently seen cancel. |

Thanks, good article. Note to anyone who goes there, you must click on July to get the September article :) Also I see that as of 1966 no evidence of a pair being found of the probate of will. |

In general it is a fairly common cancel. It shows up more on $1 values, but is on 50 cent and occasional 25 cent stamps as well. As it happens, I have it on a pair of 50 cent Probate of Will. I also have it on a pair of 25 cent Power of Attorney |

With the Red ink are there many copies out there with a nice bold strike? |

once seen the cancel is unmistakable. single copies will not usually show a complete strike. most that I have seen are diagonal as yours is. nice single examples can be found with a bit of diligent looking around. multiples are a bit harder to find, but are always nice. it is found on several titles and denominations. |

I seem to recall seeing a document many years ago, but they should be more common then they seem to be. |

It's really not a cancel; it's really a custom house marking used as a cancel.

given that documents should exist but do not seem to be, I wonder if they were cancelled in sheets and affixed as needed? |

I have seen an image of this cancel on document. As I recall it clearly tied the stamp to the document and as noted it was at an angle to the stamp. That suggests that this was not a precancellation. |
