The cancel on this pair, though not easy to see in this scan, starts "Elmira, N.Y. Caparulo's S...."
Caparulo's what? I haven't been able to find the answer to that on the internet. Maybe a postal station in some business?
BTW: This is not a color variety of this particular stamp issue. For some reason, my scanner chose not to show its true color.

For giggles, I did a Google search for 'Elmira' and 'Caparulo', and got over 5000 hits! It appears that the Caparulo family has a long history in Elmira. If you don't get an answer from someone here, I would contact one of the Caparulo's in Elmira and ask him/her directly. Sorry I cannot be more help.

I believe the answer is "Caparulo's Variety Store (Substation)". In a search of the Caparulo's of Elmira there is a written piece by Joe Caparulo in which he describes there being a postal substation at the family variety store.

The monotone version of the schoolhouse stamp is better than the USPS's color scheme, IMO.
