I just obtained my third example of this fancy 20th century shield cancel, all three on different denominations. I've posted about it before, but still to date no one has been able to identify the company that used it.

The new example:

Every example I have seen is like these, off document. Until and unless someone finds one still on something, it's unlikely we will know, unless we get very lucky. Lucky would include finding an ad somewhere that matches up.

The obvious tendency might be to say the SS stands for steamship, but who knows.

'rona, is that you?

I took a spin through the Revs - Perfin catalog (Vol 1, transaction revs) just in case something popped out.

SCS - nada
SES - nada
S&S - Starkweather and Shepley, Inc (Providence, RI); Simmonds and Slade (NYC); Shuman & Seligmann (NYC)
SSC - Steinwender Stoffregen & Co (NYC)
SSE - nada

Suggest you start with the Steinwender Stroffregen & Co (NYC). They have a very fancy triangle perfin where the Mercedes like design in the bottom has one letter in each section, almost like the bottom of your shield design.

Other than that - I got nuttin......

Steinwender Stoffregen & Co (NYC) was a coffee company. A look at some of their products does not show any logo even remotely similar to this shield.

Actually I took the Steinwender Stoffregen & Co (NYC) and did some deep searches which yielded some possible clues, especially down their Yale Brand Coffee as the text of the SS and C looks very similar and they do use a shield logo..

Additionally, it looks like they did have their own advertising postcards...

Still can't find the actual shield postmark you show and this may not be it.. but it's close-ish

I think that shield on the Yale Coffee bin is actually the 1904 World's Fair prize seal, not the company logo.

I tried searching old US trademark registrations with combinations of knights and shields, but design searching is difficult so I gave up after an hour. Hardy souls can visit https://tess2.uspto.gov/ and give it a try.
