This showed up on ebay, and despite the small tear at lower left, I felt it was worth a lowball snipe given the nice cancel and its positioning. Came with a 2012 APEX cert. The date and position of the cancel are identical to another R65a that was sold by Kelleher in 2016 (sale 690, lot 712). I think it might benefit from a soak and a press.

That is very nice. Love those where it looks like the person stamping them went out of their way to do it perfectly and firmly. Boom! Instant beauty. |

This was almost certainly cancelled beforehand as part of a large multiple. |

Very nice and crisp. I've looked at this several times now, between the Y of Seventy and the C of Cents there appears to be the beginnings of a plate crack. Scott doesn't mention a cracked plate for the 65a. |

That line shows up on almost all examples of the 70 cent to some degree. It never develops sufficiently to call it anything other then somewhat interesting. |

On R65c, the perforated version of this stamp, many people mistakenly believe the anomaly that Moyock13 pointed out is the Scott-listed plate crack, but it is not. The Scott listed plate crack is in the bottom margin below the design on plate position 52. Alternatively, it may be a tool gouge rather than a plate crack. |

The reason I suggested a plate crack, I have recently stumbled across three R65c's with the same somewhat interesting plate crack between the Y of Seventy and the C of Cents. Although mine are R65c's, the R65a was from the same plate just perforated, correct? Take a look and tell me what you think. |

I have never found a satisfactory explanation for this, but since it shows up to some degree on almost every example, it cannot be a crack. It has to be something either in the die or the transfer roll. A full proof sheet might be interesting to examine. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to the positions relative to the marking. https://postalmuseum.si.edu/object/...999.2018.124 |
