Is this a precancel? Or a box cancel from Palacios Tx. Looks like
it could be a 404.

Box cancel for parcel post and such.
Note the text is longer than what would fit on a definitive stamp.

Maybe the stamp should have been oriented the other way (lengthwise) when it was printed up because the font letters look the same size just a little more widely spaced. Seems to me like the rubber handstamps would have been a north to south orientation.

Yours is still a box cancel. Stamps are often applied to parcels at odd angles and hand cancels are applied at any angle too, creating any rotation combination you would want.

Here, from Flora, Indiana in the same font as yours. Soaked off, the pair would be interesting, the singles would not.

Thanks much for the info. After thinking about it a little while my mind started going over if it was a precancel it would have to have been stamped with one of those multiple precancel devices. And if that was the case the device could not have been cockeyed at least as far as this was. So I agree with your explanation.
