What would cause the impression to have this "flattened" appearance?
I've not seen this before on U429s. Would appreciate knowing what the cause was.

Probably an electrotype late in life. Electrotypes were used for several of the 2c dies in order to keep up with production demands. Electrotypes were made "in house" and not out of steel like the master dies from the mint.

Thomas, US postal stationery EFO guru, will probably chime in on this later.
