Maybe part of album page that got stuck on it when removed. Looks like a black image one might see on a printed album page. |

Look at upper left of back ... it's another layer of something (I think piece of old album page) on top of the original. At some point, someone tried to trim out some perf holes in it to make it not as noticable. It would probably soak off fine. |

I agree with canyoneer. The stamp is OG and what you see at the back is ?H. That cannot be the front seen through thinned paper. |

Soaking will almost certainly reveal it is a paper adhesion from old printed album page. |

Quote: Soaking will almost certainly reveal it is a paper adhesion from old printed album page. Canyoneer said it first I think....This sounds most likely to me. Early albums had highly detailed but black illustrations. Early hinges were not thin and dainty like they are now. Soak it, it's not like it's a no-liner blue. |

This is the pattern on the inside face of the hard cover. A little freaky for 1916 I would say. I have the albums for Asia, Africa and the Americas. I don't have Europe which would probably have had the best stamps in them. Do not look at this for more than 3 seconds. Things happen. |
