Lot 367. It started out with a handful of blurry pictures. This auction house knows nothing about stamps. I had to be stupid and ask for more. I had to be even dumber by bidding high and not just sitting on my hands. Oh well...it's closing today and it's pretty darn good.

Why are you out, $2000 Can looks pretty reasonable. I did notice it looks like the Zepps are in Crystal mounts and might have cellophane tape damage.

Good luck!

WOW. I have tried a few times to go into local estate sales online - thinking I might snag something interesting as they may not know stamps :) but I have yet to win anything. That one is WOW.

I had put my limit at 1 paycheck. On the upside I am close enough to pick up without shipping. I will keep watch just for fun.

Who knows what condition anything is in? That's the problem. If everything that might be valuable is in good shape with no thins, tears, or other damage, it might be worth the $2100 that album is at now. But I'd be prepared for otherwise.

The Zeps looked toned (badly) to my eyes.

Agree about the Crystal mounts and they seem to be sprinkled in throughout the collection. They may very well have damaged the C13-15.

We have seen this more than once lately. What is the exuberance based upon? Not much. As has been stated there is no way of knowing condition or even genuineness. I look at other material in the collection beyond the Columbian's and Trans-Mississippi's and a few others and that material does not lead to the conclusion that the "money" stamps are likely nice specimens IMHO.

Does anyone else get grossed out by fingers and thumbs, lifting stamps?

I think people are losing their grip because of covid. A lot of things sold for absurd prices. Ugly lamps, boring art. This wasn't even a proper stamp auction.

I found 30 stamp items tucked into a Weiss Collectibles auction along with 270 coin lots. I saw 3 things I'd like (if cheap) and thought I'd sneak right in there and steal them from those rubes. Some of the bidding for the stamp lots rivaled Kelleher, no bargains to be found that day and I guess I was the rube!!

It is amazing. I sat through the Spink's US auction today and most of the collection lots went for many times estimate. I was after one lot and thought that it could not attract much interest. Wrong. It went for double the high estimate. One Floor bidder, Paddle 00068, must have easily spent over 100k and thought nothing of bidding triple or quadruple estimate on everything in site from Country collections to Postal History lots and everything in between.

I am experiencing a dichotomy here........

One group criticising Catalogue prices as being absurdly high,
and the next report I read, prices double to triple estimates.

Whom would be a catalogue producer ?

--------------
Further to Drew's opinions, how would this auction operate, if one were to find some important values as facsimiles.?
Could one return as not what was apparently offered?
It would appear to me, one is risking $6,000 on property
unappraised other than internet images.

Normal property auction are final on the fall of the hammer, correct?

I'm curious as to whether any of you have recently watched better individual sets or singles. Is the bidding behavior similar to what is being seen for collections?

P.S. The USA #1 and #2 also appear damaged by the Crystal mounts.

Shermae - No, large lots are showing the most aggressive bidding. Of course really good singles and sets still do well but people are not bidding three and four times catalog value. It is obvious that resellers are competing to replenish stock.

I am constantly receiving solicitations from dealers that I have dealt with that are desperate to purchase material for inventory. It is a VERY hot market right now.
