I got this as a curiosity...I was also amused that the city is Virginia, Nevada and the bank is Bank of California (New York). Does anyone know why the revenue stamp (152a or 152b I think) would be affixed to a check such as this?

The tax on checks was 2 cents and lasted from 1862 to 1883. The value of the check was irrelevant, the tax was always the same.

Thank you for that info! So I guess any check from that period would have a similar format with a place for the stamp. Interesting.

Usually they did, but not always. From 1862-1871 there were a lot of taxes on financial paper of all kinds, among a wide range of other taxes. The check tax lasted far and away the longest. All to pay for the Civil War.
