Hi, I got this 9 p Samoa stamp, probably 1877. I have read a lot about forgeries of these stamps and was wondering would that be the case here as well? I seem to note some minor cancellation ink. Is it used or not? The back show quite pronounced yellowish/brown gum (I can make a scan if necessary).

The Samoa Express issues are one of those issues where every stamp you see should be classed as a reprint or a forgery unless confirmed by an expert as genuine.

In this case I'd say it's a reprint.

Thanks for the input. For what it's worth - here is the back. I now notice it's got a symbol. I'm increasingly intrigued.

So yes, a reprint or remainder, 4th state.

A few marks don't necessarily constitute a cancel. These are not postmarks. The "symbol" on the back is likely a partial illustration from a stamp album that has stuck to the back.
