Hi, I got this nicely preserved Brazilian stamp from 1920. Now, this is again one of those where the cancelled/used stamp is more valuable than the unused. Curious if anyone can explain me the story there. Secondly, because of at least two recent cases in my collection I have learned to be suspicious of forged cancels. Is that the case here or is this genuine?

Did you check whether it has a watermark?

I do not have fluid yet, but so far all watermarks appear clearly to me with some strategic backlight. I do not notice any in this case. Maybe Brazil watermarks are flimsy, in which case I do not notice, but my best guess is there is none. Here is the back.

The stamp issued in 1920 has no watermark. This is cheaper cancelled than mint. The one that is more expensive cancelled than mint has "CASA DO MOEDA" as watermark. It was issued in 1921 and has a different Michel nr.

Sometimes, stamps were in use for a short period. Even if they are quite common, the period of use may have been too short for them to be common postally used. Many modern stamps are mostly bought by collectors and remain mint. Post offices apply labels or stock only one type of stamp: in the Netherlands, you hardly see other stamps than those of Willem Alexander, the Delft-blue style "Dutch scenes" and some inland type stamps. Most stamps do not make it to PostNL outlets. Consequently, used stamps become rarer than mint stamps. Hyperinflation can also cause this: when you buy it, it pays for postage, when you paid for it, it no longer meets the tariff.
