Geographically, Panama is part of North America. Geologically it participates in both North and South America. Historically and culturally it is radically different from even Colombia of which it used to form a part. |

I hope I am not killing this thread by posting so many photos. Canal Zone stamps and Panamanian coins were a passion of mine back in the 1970's. My interest in this field took hold after making a couple of trips to the CZ between 1968 and 1971, thanks to Uncle Sam. One of my first stops after leaving the ship in Coco Solo was to stop at the post office in Cristobal before boarding the train to Balboa. It was a real treat being able to buy such old issues over the counter. The photo below shows the Cristobal Post Office at the right and train in the background. |

On the subject of the Panama Canal. There is a geography related question that I heard years ago and have never forgotten.
That being:
If you were traveling through the Panama through the Panama Canal from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean would you be traveling in the generally Easterly or Westerly direction?
As you are a stamp collector then you probably already know the answer, so I will not delay providing the answer to this question.
You would be traveling in a generally Easterly direction.

It is also interesting to note that all of those Canal Zone stamps issued 1928-40 commemorated individuals -- many of whom I never heard of -- that were all involved in some way with the Panama Canal. All were US Citizens, too.
(Not even Wiki has all of their biographies, though.) |

I believe the canal runs northwest (Colon/Atlantic side) to southeast (Panama City/Pacific side). Panama City is geographically a little east of Colon. |
