For some reason I have a bear of a time telling the difference between Vermillion and Lake varieties of the 4c Edward Wilder private die revenues. I've looked at PF certs on-line for some help, but I'm still not confident. Below is a group and I'm only certain about the right a left most stamps, only because of their paper types. From L to R, the two old papers appear to be vermillion and then lake. The silk one I'm not sure, it doesn't look like either... if I had to guess: lake?

What is the key to this, if any? Vermillion seems more orange, while lake tends to the red?

kbt...it is very difficult to tell shades on a computer......that said I will comment as follows:
your examples of the Wilders are very nice copies indeed, especially if sound. the vermillions almost always have a red-orange look to them and are usually bright. the lake is usually a deep darker color with none of the red-orange. I think your silk is a pale vermillion shade, which is a very good stamp if I am correct.
i think your left old paper is a also a vermillion.
perhaps Eric or others will comment and be able to confirm them for you.

The old paper in the middle appears to be lake, the other three appear to be vermilion.

It can be difficult from scans, but I believe the two stamps at left are vermilion. Of the three at right the center stamp is a tough call and is probably a pale lake, but the other two definitely lake. These are much better to see the actual stamps to make a determination.

Yes. vermillion is more orange. Lake has a hint of purple to it and is darker than vermillion. Unfortunately, light sources, computer scanners, computer monitors, and individuals all differ in their interpretation of color. Eric hit the nail on the head so to speak as personal examination is the best way to determine color (backed up, preferably, by a reference copy like your key).

Thanks all! Great feedback as usual.

Certainly understand the pitfalls of the scan/display process. It will be nice when shows start up again and I can get in person opinions.

I suppose on the higher value items I could send out for a cert. I assume PF does a good job on colors?

Yes, the PF has people who know these shades.
