I believe I've correctly identified this Official cut square as an UO18, however, the cancel seems interesting. Is anyone familiar with the source or type of this fancy cancel?
Actually, with the usual disclaimer of colors on computer screens, this looks like it's on manila paper and red rather than dark red. The characteristics of the die are that of the later issue. So I feel this is WO46.
As for the cancel, it looks like branches of holly to me. I haven't found it in any reference I happen to have, but there are still many fancy cancels that are unrecorded.
Making opinions on scans is dangerous, but my gut feeling is that the cancellation is not genuine. The ink looks incorrect and the cancellation is far too intricate for the 1870 - 1880 time period. I may be wrong, but that is my observation.
Agreed, looks suspect to my hobbyist eye. Too crisp, too well centered, and the lack of more of the cover makes me dubious. But I hope that your inquiry here 'shakes the tree' (pun intended) and more examples come forth. Don
